Community Foundation of Louisville

For nearly thirty years, The Community Foundation of Louisville has been helping people, businesses and organizations convert private assets into community philanthropic resources to improve the quality of life for current and future generations of Kentuckians.

Since 1984, The Community Foundation of Louisville, through its donors, has built a charitable endowment to support the nonprofits that make the Commonwealth of Kentucky a vital and secure place in which to live and work.

The Community Foundation of Louisville (CFL) helps donors with their giving today and enables their generosity to continue after their lifetimes, supporting the causes

they cared about and solving problems we can’t imagine today.

As the state’s largest Community Foundation, the Foundation administers a growing collection of more than 1,100 charitable funds established by individuals, families, businesses and other organizations that care about the future of our region and the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  The Community Foundation provides personalized services that make philanthropy easy, flexible and meaningful for anyone and for any cause.

To help make the services and benefits of a community foundation available to more Kentuckians, CFL staff helps other areas develop their own community foundations in affiliation with The Community Foundation of Louisville.  The affiliate foundations are governed by a local board of community leaders and directed toward meeting local needs.  CFL serves as fiduciary and mentor, providing technical assistance and all back-office support services.  Through affiliation with CFL, less populous cities can enjoy the benefits of a community foundation, while avoiding the administrative concerns and costs of operating a separate foundation.  CFL currently administers affiliate foundations serving 16 counties in Kentucky.

CFL holds funds for six affiliate community foundations: the Community Foundation of Nelson County, the Green River Area Community Foundation (serving Daviess, Hancock, McLean, Ohio, Union and Webster Counties), the Oldham County Community Foundation, the Shelby County Community Foundation, the Heartland Community Foundation (serving Hardin County) and the Wilderness Trace Community Foundation (serving Boyle, Garrard, Lincoln and Mercer Counties).

Grants and distributions from the Community Foundation’s funds support a wide range of cultural, educational and humanitarian programs according to each donor’s specifications.

The Community Foundation of Louisville has grown from six funds with $1.1 million in assets in 1984 to over 1,100 funds with more than $350 million in assets. The Community Foundation of Louisville approved 7,150 grants totaling more than $32 million in 2011 from Endowment, Depository and Corporate Depository funds. In 2011, generous individuals and organizations made gifts to the Community Foundation totaling more than $44 million.
